Ubuntu 11.10 and Gnome 3 are a great example of why users won’t switch to Linux on a Desktop
Listening to people I converted to using Ubuntu complaining about issues w/ 11.10, I just kinda brushed them off and chided them for not learning new ways of doing things.
Sadly, I was wrong.
Today I forgot the power adapter to my MBP so I ended up having to use my work laptop I had installed Ubuntu 11.04 and then later upgraded to 11.10 "just to do it", but never really used it as a desktop till today.
While I don't think Unity is "all that bad", I understand it is a simplified UI for simple people. What I do have an issue w/ is something as basic as setting Proxy server settings is broken, has been broken and no plans it seems to fix it any type of timely manner. Specially for a bug that makes the OS useless in any environment other than a home network. From what I can tell, This bug/broken functionality started back in Sept. 2011. Here it is 4 months later and it is still in horribly broken state.
Guess I will just start pimping OSX since it at least works and can be used in a real environment. Only reason I even started to use OSX was due to I had more friends converting from Windows to Mac's and I needed to learn it. Once I started using it I realized it was a better "*nix" desktop and have not looked back since. Before that I had been using Linux (Mandrake, Mandriva and then Ubuntu) as my work place OS for 10+ years. Even when my job title was Windows SA.
Really pains me that a major Linux desktop OS has become worse than Microsoft Bob.
Comcast just pleasantly surprised me
Been putting off calling up Comcast to get the PTR record changed for mail server due to my innate slacking nature and my dread of dealing w/ Comcast support. After my past experiences getting my service and then upgrading it from 1 to 5 static IP's I would end up sitting on hold forever and trying to explain what a PTR was and that they could change it.
Instead I was on and quickly off the phone again. There was no run around... Well one, But I will get to that... The person, who sadly in my shock forgot to remember his name, knew what the PTR record was, how to create and enter the ticket and had me off and on my way to a more reliable mail service. He even took care of another minor issue I had w/ my router in the blink of an eye. I can honestly say that was the best tech support I have gotten in a long time and still not believing that it was Comcast.
My only issue w/ the whole ordeal was I had to use an old number in their automation system and manually enter all 20+ numbers of my account code. Even after doing this, I still had to then give them verbally to the tech once I got done sitting on hold. Pretty sure I spent more time dealing w/ the automated system than I did w/ a live person.
I guess I should also tell Comcast thank you for finally giving me BBC America in HD, Love it.
Next up on getting stuff off my "slack" list is getting my passport. Really hope I didn't use up all my good luck on the Comcast experience to be punished there.
Are there holiday’s coming up or something?
I just got three emails out of the blue for three different liquors in one day. The one for Johnnie Walker Double Black sounds good. The 2nd was for a Macallen tasting, but the web site seems to be /.'ed. And the third was from the local H&F Bottle ship for some matched up adult beverage and food basket.
Dark Side of the Moon Immersion Box Set
While I love Pink Floyd, I hate people who keep releasing the same stuff over and over again to make money /coughLucas/cough.
But while that is what I believe, Odds are I am going to be buying all 3 of the new Pink Floyd Box sets... Maybe. I know for sure I will buy the Wish You Were Here for sure, The Wall is more than likely, but Darkside of the Moon I am kinda waffling on. While the album is good and I Time, Breathe and Brain Damage are some of my favorite songs. The album as a whole I could take or leave. Guess it has to do w/ the popularity of the album and I am completely sick of the song Money being over played.
One thing I noticed though while putting all the albums on my calendar to remind me of their release dates was that Dark Side of the Moon release date is on the same day as a new moon. Kinda curious if that was done on purpose or just a coincidence as the album meshing so well w/ Wizard of Oz.
